Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shined, for unto us a child is born, a son is given.”
We are in darkness here, oh God
miserable being here this Christmas.
Want to be home at this time.
We are not home. Yet…. we are not alone.

May we be the light that shined on:
.     mates on the Wings – encouragement
.          wife on the phone – a truly listening ear
.               kids in the Visitors Centre – sweet words.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

II
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him…
With righteousness He shall judge the poor and reprove with equity.”
Next week, next month
may this be so, in our own court cases.

On the judge we will stand before,
God – help us to accept what we should
.     the crime
.         the shame
.             the guilt.
We pray for fairness and justice
for us, victims, and all others involved.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

III
O Come, O Come Emmanuel,
death’s dark shadows put to flight.”
I don’t want to die in prison;
addictions, stress, poor exercise, poor mental health.
Death’s dark shadows draw me down.

From depths of Hell thy people save
Give them victory o’er the grave”
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

IV
When Joseph woke up,
he did as the angel of the Lord commanded”
Joseph cared for a kid that was not his, but before God,
made it more than just a job.

A prisoner is not just for Christmas. He could be for life.
Bless and inspire the Prison Staff to show,
the wisdom, patience and endurance of Jesus.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

V
Wise men came from The East saying ’where is He?’”
May we be The Wise Men too!
Ha – some of us come from The East
Ha – some of our “wisdom” brought us to this very place.

This prison be Our Bethlehem
.     To us see Jesus, afresh.
.         An odd bunch around Jesus then.
.             An odd bunch around Jesus now.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

VI
Then Herod summonsed the wise men secretly
Ah – the silvered, twisting tongues
of the Herods of this world.

Lord, may we truly see past
their kindly words, to their cruel deeds.
The Wise Men went home another way.
.     When we get home,
.         may we go another way too.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

VII
The Angel of The Lord appears to Mary, and she was afraid.
The Angel of The Lord appears to the Shepherds, and they were afraid.
The Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, and he was afraid.

He wants to appear to us.  We resist. We are afraid
.     of what might happen,
.         of how we need to change.
Help us grip those fears. Then climb over them,
and become the true men that You wants us to be.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
and ransom your captive people

Note 1: These are Advent Season prayers I wrote and used in prisons
Note 2: Emmanuel?  A name., yes.  Immanuel is Hebrew for “God is with us.”
